STS Defence selected for new defence research framework

16th July 2018

STS Defence Limited has been approved by The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to work with QinetiQ as a member of the Progeny Community of Interest “Team Rhodos”, conducting maritime R&D for the UK Ministry Of Defence (MOD).

STS Defence Limited has been selected to form part of the new UK MOD “Progeny Maritime Research Framework”, as a member of “Team Rhodos”, the Community of Interest being managed by the prime contractor, QinetiQ.

The ‘Progeny’ framework is worth £200 million over the eight-year programme, and will create a collaborative framework to simplify maritime research and development for the UK’s defence industry. It is expected to look into topics such as autonomous and unmanned systems through to underwater communications and networking.

The STS Defence Research and Technology capability includes specialist areas such as mission-critical communications, networks, electronics and intelligent systems.  Current research activities are exploring the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to solving real-world problems such as fire safety and machine reliability.

Robert Matthews, Business Development Manager for STS Defence explained why STS was selected by QinetiQ and approved by Dstl; “Our research and technology team has proven its ability across a number of leading-edge initiatives. This experience makes us well positioned to support Dstl and QinetiQ on this challenging yet exciting programme”.

STS Managing Director Jonathan Bowley commented: “This is a great opportunity that is well aligned with our mission to understand our customers’ issues and requirements, and then to develop robust, workable and cost-effective solutions that deliver results in an ever advancing field of maritime technology.”
